Who are we, and what is the Gender Pay Gap?

We are the Mind the Gap community, based in Jersey.  A group of female business leaders and allies, we are advocating for gender parity.  Our primary goal is to encourage businesses in Jersey (with +50 FTEs) to publish their gender pay gaps with an action plan.

Equal Pay


Equal pay refers to the principle that men and women should receive the same pay for doing the same job or work of equal value. This means that if two employees, regardless of gender, are performing the same tasks with the same level of skill, effort, and responsibility, they should be compensated equally.

Gender Pay Gap


The gender pay gap is a broader measure that looks at the average difference in earnings between men and women across an entire organisation, industry, or country. It takes into account various factors such as differences in job types, working hours, career breaks, and other social and economic factors. The gender pay gap is often expressed as a percentage of men's earnings.

Key Differences:

Equal pay focuses on individual roles and ensuring fairness in compensation for the same work. The gender pay gap looks at overall earnings differences across a wider population.

Equal pay is measured by comparing salaries for the same job. The gender pay gap is calculated by comparing average earnings between men and women.

Equal pay issues arise from direct discrimination or unequal treatment in specific roles. The gender pay gap can be influenced by a variety of factors, including occupational segregation, differences in work experience, and societal norms.


Understanding these differences is crucial for addressing both individual and systemic inequalities in the workplace.
